FlashAccounting implements accounting outsourcing via the Web for small to medium businesses. The level of outsourcing is tailored to the needs of the customer, from data entry of transactional paper to complete outsourcing. Overview

The accounting function is a good candidate for outsourcing in most companies. While some functions will never be outsourced - for example the decision of how to post a complex transaction in the General Ledger - or outsourced to specialist organizations - for example the processing of payroll - the large majority of bookkeeping and financial processes with a company can profitably be outsourced.

Another reason for outsourcing of accounting is the fractured state of the accounting software market. It is common to see a fast growing company go through three or four different accounting software packages in the spate of a few years, starting with a simple package but being forced to go to progressively more complex packages as the company grows. Each transition from one package to another is tedious and expensive. Outsourcing the accounting functions at the right time transfers the issue of selecting the appropriate package to the outsourcer.

FlashAccounting uses a combination of scanning and electronic data capture to transmit the accounting source data to the outsourcing center, where the processing takes place. Exceptions are presented to the customer via the Web for resolution.
Depending on the level of outsourcing, the data - converted for import into the customer's accounting package - are returned to the customer, or the transactions are posted in the accounting package running at the outsourcing center.

The next step may be matching of payables or receivables, using the appropriate files - purchase orders, shippers, etc.- to ensure that the payment sought from a vendor or received from a customer matches what should be paid.

The outsourcer takes over more and more work from the customer in this fashion, the end-state being the complete outsourcing of all candidate processes within the Accounting Department, including running the accounting package(s) as an ASP.
